The Legend of Dragoon Wiki

Kongol (コンゴール, Kongōru) is the last surving individual of the Gigantos, the 97th species from the Divine Tree.

Character Design[]

Kongol is a tall and muscular Giganto with black hair in the style of a mohawk, red markings over each of his eyes that resembles face paint or scars, and eyes with apparently no irises.

As an initial boss character, and when he joins the party later, he is seen shirtless and wears only a brown cross belted armor with a skull insignia at the center of his chest, yellow pauldrons in each side of his shoulder, a brown loincloth with a black belt with a bull shaped buckle and traditional black furred with steel strapped gray boots. He also wears traditional brown gloves with black furred sleeves and wields a giant axe.

Artwork of Kongol.

Artwork of Kongol.

When he faces Dart and the group before they confront Emperor Doel, Kongol is seen in traditional Giganto armor similar to his brother Indora, but with a skull motif, and he fights using claws instead of his giant axe. The color of his armor is light gold and black. However, when he was defeated, his armor is destroyed to reveal his primary outfit, which was concealed under his traditional armor.

As a Dragoon, Kongol bears a strong resemblance to Belzac's Dragoon form.

He wears gold Dragoon heavy armor with indigo blue accents and a green gem at the center of his armor, a matching gold greaves which is connected to his armor, indigo blue pants, gold knee-high Dragoon armor boots with indigo blue round designs in the center and his giant axe transformed into a large Dragoon Axe in a steel motif. He also wears a matching gold gauntlets, a gold v-shaped dragon headband and his Dragoon wings are light orange, light yellow and gold with black metallic outlines.

While in this form, the accents of his Dragoon armor are capri blue and his Dragoon wings appear as light purple, light green and gold with black metallic outlines.

Personality[]

Kongol is extremely loyal to someone that cares about him and will do anything to protect his allies. His loyalty is seen both towards Emperor Doel and Dart, to which Kongol seeks to repay their kindness. He is also serious and fierce in the battlefield. His kind, straightforward and honest personality makes him easily accepted by the group, although his closest teammate is most likely Dart, as seen in his conversation with Indora.

As a Giganto warrior, Kongol is not particularly educated and cannot read human letters, however, he is shown to have a strong intuition, an innate sense of danger as well as stronger five senses compared to his fellow Humans or Winglies. This is exemplified by him recognizing the smell of blood in the ancient colosseum in the Forbidden Land, recognizing a picture symbol in a teleporter room as a Giganto symbol at the Forbidden Land and sensing the danger in the Kashua Glacier when the group is about to face Windigo.

Gameplay[]

Abilities and Attributes[]

Kongol is a very polarizing character, with an enormous HP pool as well as the strongest physical attributes in the entire group, while at the same time having the worst magical abilities and slowest speed. His physical strength is notorious for giving him massive attacking power even with his starting addition, as well as the ability to barely take a scratch from physical attacks by the majority of enemies.

These strengths, however, come at the pricy cost of him being extremely susceptible to magical attacks, particularly in boss fights, where he tends to lose the majority (if not outright all) of his HP when hit with virtually any stronger magic spell. This makes his survivability rather situational and gives him a hard time in many boss fights, where enemies tend to increasingly use strong magical attacks as the game progresses. Another glaring weakness of Kongol is his terrible speed, the lowest of the entire cast at 30, which also significantly compromises his ability to deal damage.

Kongol’s Dragoon form is rather unimpressive as well, with his Dragoon Magic being extremely weak due to the aforementioned lack of magical attack despite a base 200% stat boost, having only three Dragoon Magic spells instead of the usual four, and being the only character who has not a 5-count, but a 4-count Dragoon addition, which is easier to pull off, but presumably weaker, although a completed Dragoon addition with Kongol usually still deals vast amounts of damage.

Despite these flaws, Kongol can be one of the most satisfying characters to play and has some useable strengths. His huge damage output allows him to quickly take care of minor enemies, sometimes even killing them in a single turn, lowering the risk of getting attacked in return. It it also beneficial that he has the lowest amount of additions among the cast, as this allows him to quickly progress to his final addition, Bone Crusher. While it only has a maxed damage multiplier of 300%, the lowest among all final additions, Kongol’s tremendous base attacking power makes up for it.

Overall, Kongol is a character of extremes, boasting a mix of both remarkable strengths and glaring flaws. It is disputable which of these outweigh the other, although it can generally be said that he has a hard time against many bosses in the game, while faring significantly better in regular encounters.

Kongol's Stats[]

The following table lists Kongol's stats in steps of 10 Levels up to Level 60:

Level HP AT DF M AT M DF
20 1400 94 96 23 22
30 2818 143 148 35 32
40 4356 198 187 48 47
50 7541 227 223 60 63
60 9750 254 254 75 80

Kongol's Speed is 30, the lowest in the cast.

Weapons[]

Kongol's weapons of choice are huge axes. On average, they have the strongest attack values of all weapon types in the game.

Name Attack Price Location Effect
Axe 45 N/A Initial
Tomahawk 59 300 Deningrad
Battle Axe 67 350 Kashua Glacier
Great Axe 79 400 Zenebatos Chance to cause Stun
Indora's Axe 88 N/A Moon Chance of causing instant Death

Armor[]

Similar to Haschel, none of the body armor that Kongol can wear can be worn by another group member, except for the Armor of Legend that everyone, male and female, can wear. Like Haschel, there is one helm that he alone can wear, although he can wear others as well.

Only Kongol can wear this helm:

Name Def. Mag. Def. Mag. Att. Price Location Effect
Giganto Helm 10 5 14 200 Furni Gain SP from magic damage

These are body armors that can only be equipped by Kongol, in order of their defense:

Lion Fur 46 20 - Initial
Breastplate 59 14 250 Deningrad
Giganto Armor 75 25 400 Vellweb Gain SP from physical damage
Golden DG Armor 88 23 800 Moon Nullifies earth damage

Additions[]

Main article: Additions

Kongol has only two basic additions, with none of them particularly strong or good in SP gain. This, however, can also be seen as an advantage, as he is able to unlock his final addition earlier than other characters, although he has fewer rounds than other team members due to his poor speed. Bone Crush has a significantly lower maxed damage multiplier than the final addition of other characters, however, it is arguably easier to pull off, gains him a decent amount of SP in comparison to his previous additions, and his massive physical attack attribute still results in major damage for his enemies.

Acquiring the Dragoon Spirit[]

There are two different ways to obtain Kongol's Dragoon Spirit. The first way is to buy it for 1,000 Gold from the merchant in Lohan who gave the player the bottle during the events of Disc 1. If the player is planning on using Kongol as a party member, this is definitely the way to go, as the only other way to acquire it is nearly at the end of the game, when the player fights Kongol's brother, Indora, and also acquires Indora's Axe. Getting it in Lohan gives the player a lot more time to gain Dragoon Levels with Kongol.

Dragoon Transformation[]

To transform into a Dragoon, Kongol's Golden Dragoon Spirit glows in a white light and makes a powerful downward punch into the ground forming a massive fissure that also covers him in a large rock and is burst into pieces to reveal his Dragoon form.

Dragoon Magic[]

Main article: Dragoon Magic

Despite a high 200% base boost on magical attack, Kongol's Dragoon magic is unimpressive, as he still lacks magical attack and has low-damaging spells against all enemies but with no further effect. It is arguably a better strategy to rely on his Dragoon Addition, which is only 4-count instead of 5-count as with other characters, but deals significant damage nonetheless.

Name Dragoon Level MP Target Effect
Grand Stream Initial 10 All enemies Earth 25%
Meteor Strike 2 30 All enemies Earth 50%

Boss Battles[]

WARNING: Section contains spoilers.

Kongol is fought as a boss twice in the game.

Battle at Hoax[]

During the battle at Hoax, Kongol will take two "stances", one with his axe and one without. When he has his axe out he has only one basic attack with his axe. When he switches to fighting with his bare hands, the fight becomes much harder, particularly if the player isn't consistent with additions. In this stance, Kongol has three attacks:

  • Lariat: Kongol runs at Dart or Lavitz, smashing his arm into their head.
  • Head Slam: Kongol grabs both Dart and Lavitz and smashes their heads together, then throws them up in the air and bashes them against the wall.
  • Counter: If the player miss one attack during the addition, Kongol will immediately stop the addition and begin wailling on the character before tossing them back.

The player has to fight only with Dart and Lavitz. Using magical attack items (recommended with Dart due to his higher magical attack) can make this fight significantly easier, as Kongol takes vast amounts of damage when hit with magic. It is also important to be consistent with additions, as after putting his axe away, Kongol will unleash a strong counter attack each time the player misses an addition. Overall, the fight against Kongol can prove to be among the more difficult ones for beginners, as the player had to face a Sandora Elite right before the battle with Kongol.

As usual at the end of a boss fight, a cutscene begins and Dart rushes forward to deliver the finishing blow. However, Kongol raises his forearm and strikes Dart to the ground. However, Dart is saved by his Dragoon powers that are awakaned by Rose.

Battle in the Black Castle[]

Kongol encounters the heroes once again in Black Castle right before fighting Emperor Doel. This time, he has a new set of Giganto armor and few new moves.

  • Claw Attack: Kongol picks one target and slashes them with his claw.
  • Wall Crash: A wall arises behind one of the heroes and Kongol pins them to the wall with his claw. He then begins to wail on them and finally punch him/her through the wall.
  • Magic Barrier: Kongol summons a magic barrier that repels magical attacks.
  • Counter: If the player misses one attack during the addition, Kongol will immediately stop the addition and begin walling on the character before tossing them back.

This time the player has the chance to get ready before the fight so pick the characters that have the most damaging additions with the least combos so the players don't get hit with his counter attack. Besides the greater amount of health and a few new moves, the fight is generally similar to the one at Hoax. If the player casts offensive magic in their Dragoon form, Kongol will summon a magic barrier. Once it goes up, the player won't be able to use magic-based attacks so they will be force to stick with the D-Attack until the barrier goes down.

Story[]

WARNING: Section contains spoilers.

Note: The main story of the game is found in the corresponding articles for the four chapters:

The following section only summarizes events where Kongol is particularly highlighted.

Before the events of the game[]

Kongol is the sole known survivor of the Gigantos, the 97th race from the Divine Tree. He once had an older brother, Indora, who was a very powerful Giganto, the most powerful as claimed by Kongol. The rest of his kind was slain by humans for fearing their size and power.

However, about 20 years ago, he was saved by Doel, the brother of the King of Serdio. Under Doel's leadership and his ideals for a world where all species are equal, Kongol became a tough and strong warrior fighting for Imperial Sandora.

Chapter 1: The Serdian War[]

In front of Kongol and Lavitz, Dart transforms into the Dragoon of the Red-Eye Dragon.

When Dart, Lavitz, and Shana arrive at Hoax, they assist in defending the town against Imperial Sandora. During the nightly raid, Dart and Lavitz are challenged by the Giganto warrior. After a hard fight, Dart rushes in to deliver a finishing blow, but Kongol knocks him to the ground.

As Kongol raises his axe to finish off Dart, suddenly, there is a glimpse light appears in the sky, as Rose, a Dragoon warrior comes in and interrupts the fight. She calls upon the Dragoon Spirit of Dart, and Dart begins to glow. As Dart transforms into a Dragoon, a burst of energy flings Kongol away. Lavitz stands by and is amazed to see Dart transformed. With Kongol knocked out, a Sandoran Soldier calls for retreat, with Kongol vowing to return.

"Giganto don't die! Giganto will pay you back!!"

Kongol is defeated on his knees, as Dart and his group approach Emperor Doel's throne room.

Kongol appears one more time in the Black Castle in Kazas, when Dart and his companions approach Emperor Doel's throne room. In a powerful Giganto armor, he faces off against the group again, but is eventually defeated. Rose destroys his armor, and as Kongol falls to his knees, he begs them to finish him off, as he sees himself unable to live with the shame of having lost despite of his strong armor.

Rose is eagier to fulfill his wish, but is stopped by Shana. Kongol stays down on his knees, shivering, and wondering why Dart and his group are kind to him despite being enemies. As the group heads off to confront Emperor Doel, Kongol is not seen again for a while.

Kongol's Menu Portrait.

In their quest to save Lynn from Donau and to retrieve the Dragoon Spirit of the Red-Eye Dragon that was stolen by the Gehrich Gang, Dart and his group chase the gang to their headquarters at the ancient Home of Gigantos. They defeat Gehrich and Mappi, but Mappi activates a trap causing a giant stone pillar to fall down onto the group. Kongol rushes in and stops it from crushing the group, using his herculean strength.

Kongol reveals that he is the sole survivor of the Gigantos, and on his intention to join Dart.

You enemy no more. Here Holy place of Gigantos. Me survivor. Human killed us. They stole Giganto's treasure. Human thinks other species can die. Human selfish creature. [...] It's for Emperor Doel. Me still small and ran. He saved Kongol. He fought against bad people. Kongol comes with you. So Kongol is here. Emperor Doel say he make world where every species equal. World needs strong leader. Whether you can be leader, Kongol will watch to the end. Giganto's sadness should not be repeated.... [...] You defeat Emperor Doel. Strong strong power. Stronger than Emperor Doel. Kongol wants to see where the power goes.

Dart gladly accept this and says that Kongol, Dart and the group are now friends.

...Friend. It sounds good.

On board of the Queen Fury, Haschel finds Kongol alone in the ship's furnace room. As Kongol states that he is always alone, Haschel assures him that he isn't alone anymore, even after losing Emperor Doel, and recommends Kongol to speak to Doel's nephew Albert.

Friends. I still don't know. Kongol is here to see if you become leader instead of Emperor Doel.

Kongol, instead of asking Albert for past stories of Emperor Doel, he instead asks for the meaning of friends reflecting on Dart's words. Albert asks him whether Emperor Doel was his friend, but Kongol denies it and says that he was fighting for Emperor Doel in his vision to create a world where all species are equal.

Maybe we can put it this way. Maybe "friends" are the people who walk on the same road. People who walk together, but not led by somebody, who share happiness and pain. Yes. That is us now. Although we have different objectives, we are walking side by side. Kongol. You are already walking the same road as us.

After King Zior proclaims the banquet in the evening in celebration of the seven heroes, the group disbands and take some individual time off. Kongol withdraws himself near the dressing rooms, doing some practice with his axe, while talking to himself of having found friends of different species.

Kongol. Has. Friends. Friends of different species. Not bad.

-Kongol

At the banquet, where Dart searches for Shana, Kongol tells Dart that he cannot see her despite his height, prompting Dart to keep searching.

As Dart and his group visit the Mille Seseau National Library to find informations about different topics, Kongol finds a book about Winglies, but admits that he cannot read human letters.

It is about Winglies, I guess. Kongol cannot read human characters. Kongol looks pictures.

-Kongol

Upon this, Dart reads the content of the book.

Let me read it. ‘Winglies are people with wings of light who employ magical power. They had their glory 11,000 years ago, and had enormous magical power that could float colossal cities.' [...] Yes, it is unimaginable in the current world. ‘They became extinct after the war with Humans who were seeking their liberation.’ But Lenus, who was a Wingly, was alive. Besides, us Dragoons are supposed to be only a legend. A legend does not necessarily tell the truth.

Ulara[]

In Ulara, as the group disbands after speaking with Charle Frahma, Kongol is found together with Albert in the shop, looking for weapons and preparing for the journey. As Dart speaks to him, Kongol appears to have abandoned the idea about a "leader", but vows to go with Dart anyway.

We don't know what will happen in ancient city of Winglies. We need strong weapon. Kongol doesn't care about leader of creatures. Kongol goes with you to the end.

Aglis, the Magical City.

In the Magical City Aglis, Kongol undergoes a test of courage by Savan. He first sees a vision of Rose who challenges him to a practice fight and verbally provokes him, mentioning his losses before and his "cheap pride of a Giganto". Kongol, however, stays calm and realizes that the vision he sees is not Rose, as both him and her have changed.

Kongol and Rose changed. Rose doesn't say such things. You are not Rose.

-Kongol

Rose attacks Kongol, but disappears after swinging her sword. Then, however, Emperor Doel appears behind Kongol, draws his sword and presses Kongol on allying with his former enemies.

Don't tell me you are buddying up with your enemy. You fool! What happened to my plan, the unification of Endiness!? Have you found the leader who replaced me!?

-Emperor Doel

Kongol, however, stays calm again, does not swing the axe and instead takes Doel's sword away, making the vision of Doel disappear. Kongol then explains that he still keeps Emperor Doel's vision in him.

Emperor Doel, Kongol got new feeling. Kongol found new friends. Intention of Emperor Doel is in Kongol. Kongol won't avoid Emperor Doel.

-Kongol

Lulu and Savan, seeing this, praise the courage of the Giganto.

Real courage can be obtained when a person is released from the bonds of the past.

Zenebatos[]

In Zenebatos, as Dart and his companions revise laws of the Winglies to proceed to the Signet Sphere, they are teleported into a jail by guardian Laptos. The jail appears to be a room with no exit, and as the group finds no way out, they notice that Kongol is missing. Just at this time, Kongol destroys the walls of the jail and frees his companions, as he was too heavy to be teleported into the jail.

Moon That Never Sets[]

Emperor Doel saving the young Kongol.

In the Moon That Never Sets, Kongol is seperated from Dart and Rose alongside Albert, Meru, Haschel and Miranda. He confronts his own past, as he witnesses the scene when he was originally saved by Emperor Doel in the ancient Home of Gigantos. Across a massive cliff, Bandits are raiding the Home of Gigantos, but are chased away by Doel and some of his soliders. They notice someone is hiding in a cavern, who actually is the little kid Kongol. Scared at first, he tries to send the humans away, but Doel tells him of his visions for peace and equality of races and tells Kongol to go with him. The young Kongol reveals that everyone else except for him is dead now.

Kongol, agitated when seeing the scene from his past, goes off alone, saying he has "something to do". Albert watches with fascination, that what he saw was also "the truth about [his] Uncle Doel". Kongol then descends alone to to the room where Dart and his group previously fought Gehrich and Mappi to meet his brother Indora.

Kongol tells Indora that he became stronger and wants to overcome his brother, who used to be the strongest of all Gigantos, to obtain the power to help Dart. The two fight in a fierce duel, with Kongol emerging victoriuos. Indora, having been defeated by his brother, acknowledges Kongol's strength.

Kongol.... a hero. The strongest hero of Gigantos. Go, to the people who need your power. To fulfill desire is the power of destruction. To care for others is the power of truth. You.... received the power to overcome Indora.... The strongest power.... Kongol, the pride of Indora.... Well done....

-Indora

In case Kongol did not receive his Dragoon Spirit at Lohan, Indora hands him the Dragoon Spirit of the Gold Dragon. From there, Kongol returns to the party with his newfound power and as the new Hero of the Gigantos.

Later, the group prepares to face Melbu Frahma, who entered the core to the Moon and merged with the body of the Virage Embryo, the God of Destruction. Kongol contemplates about the words of Emperor Doel and his original intention for joining Dart, and expresses his resolve to change the fate.

Emperor Doel would often say, 'To make a world where all species are equal, a strong leader is needed'. But Kongol knows. Anybody can make a world where all species are equal. Even when you are not Dragoon. Gigantos, Humans, Minintos, Winglies, anybody. Anybody having the feeling can do. But Kongol found out. Anybody can destroy the world too. Gigantos, Humans, Winglies, Gods, anybody. Kongol found out one more thing. We can stop him. Dragoons can save the world. Kongol, hero of Gigantos. Kongol doesn't fear god.
