The Black Monster... he appears in various legends, as a demon who rebels against and devours the gods, an evil plague that rejects peace in the world, the god that is the Moon That Never Sets. The Moon That Never Sets glows red every 108 years. It is a sign that a herald will be sent to earth, a herald is known to us as the Moon Child. The legend says the Moon Child revives the gods on earth and purifies the world. The Black Monster abhors, hates, and despises it, and kills the Moon Child. This sad karma is endless. The Black Monster plays a major role in the storyline of The Legend of Dragoon. It has been the personal goal of the main character Dart to destroy this demon to avenge the death of his parents and the destruction of his home town Neet. The Black Monster shows up every 108 years when the Moon That Never Sets glows red, signaling the appearance of the Moon Child who is said to fill the world with holy bliss.
Story[]
Before the events of the game[]
The Black Monster appears in the history approximately 11.000 years before the events of the game, at around the same time the Dragon Campaign ended. Every 108 years, the Moon That Never Sets glows red and signals the birth of the Moon Child, a god to regenerate the world and fill it with bliss and prosperity. However, instead of the Moon Child, the Black Monster appears, finds and kills the Moon Child and everyone who has witnessed the birth and life of it.
In these tragic events, Neet, Dart's hometown was destroyed 18 years before the events of the game, with only few survivors left from the village. Supposedly, Princess Louvia of Mille Seseau was the Moon Child and left for the sea on the royal ship St. Louvia, which subsequently was attacked and destroyed by the Black Monster and became a doomed Ghost Ship, where the crew and soldiers of the ship still clinge to the world in regret over their failure to protect Princess Louvia.
Identity and purpose of the Black Monster[]
WARNING: Major spoilers ahead.
The true goal of the Black Monster is to prevent the merging of the soul of the Virage Embryo, or the God of Destruction, and its body in form of the Moon That Never Sets, and to kill all that have come in contact with the Moon Child in order to prevent them to become followers to the God of Destruction.
The ancient Winglies seperated soul and body of the God of Destruction, to prevent the 108th species to be born from the Divine Tree, which was supposedly created to destroy and renew the world. Melbu Frahma, the dictator of the ancient Winglies, kept the Crystal Sphere containing the soul in his possession to draw almost unlimited magical power from it. However, during the final battle of the Dragon Campaign in Kadessa, Melbu Frahma was slain by Zieg Feld in a duel, and the Crystal Sphere broke. From then on, the released soul of the God of Destruction went wandering, possessing a human body every 108 years.
The Black Monster is revealed later on in the game to be the Dark Dragoon Rose, who took up the tragic task on preventing the destruction of the world with powers of agelessness granted to her by a choker made by Charle Frahma. The cycle of killing the Moon Child and the people who witnessed it went on to become the legend of the Black Monster.
Upon learning about the true identity of the Black Monster and its real purpose, Dart comes to a closure about his past and finds forgiveness about the destruction of his hometown.
